Traits are characteristics that things have like hair color, eye color, and height.
Living things get their traits from their parents, but traits can also come from other places. For example, a person that is out in the Sun for extended time can develop darker skin.
Genes are sections of genetic material found on chromosomes and an organism get their genes from their parents.
A mutation is when something in an organism changes and makes it grow differently, for example, the X-Men have mutated to have special powers.
Some mutations are good and some are bad, it just depends on what they change in the organism.
DNA is genetic material and it is found in the cells of living things.
DNA is short for deoxyribonucleic acid and it is the genetic material that contains the code that makes an organism.
Chromosomes are tightly coiled strands of DNA that are in the cells of all living things.
Genes are sections of DNA that are found in our chromosomes. Genes are passed from parents to offspring.
Living things make proteins based on their DNA. As proteins are made, they take on different shapes, the shape of the protein (structure) determines what the protein does (function).
Mutations are a change in the genetic code, DNA, and can sometimes lead to proteins being made wrong. An example could be a mouse that inherited a gene with a mutation, so it didn’t grow any hair.
An example of a mutation could be if you stay in the Sun too long without sunscreen. Too much Sun can change the DNA in your skin cell, which could make them divide too fast. This could cause skin cancer.
Made from nucleic acid and holds the code that makes up living things.
Tightly coiled strands of DNA found in the cells. All living things have a specific number of chromosomes; humans have 46 chromosomes (23 pairs), and get half from mom and the other half from dad.
A characteristic belonging to a population or organism.
Part of a chromosome that is inherited from the parent(s) and determines some of an organism’s characteristics.
Made from a chain of amino acids and sometimes referred to as the building blocks of life. Proteins have specific shapes (structure) and perform different tasks (functions) in the body.
The differences that occur in the same trait within a population. Variations happen randomly when DNA is passed from parent to offspring and explain why siblings with the same parents do not look exactly alike.
A bacteria that is found in the digestive track of humans and other animals that can reproduce quickly (about every 20 minutes).
A change in genetic material (DNA).
A scientist who works with collecting and analyzing evidence, aiding in crime solving.
A scientist who studies viruses. Viruses are nonliving things that contain DNA but cannot reproduce by themselves; to reproduce viruses need a host cell.
What is a mutation?
Can mutations be good, bad or have no effect? Explain.
What activities could increase your chances of having mutations in your body.
"My students loved the videos. I started the video subscription in May and used them as a review before the state test, which I know contributed to 100% of my class passing the state test."
