The leaves are dropping, there’s crisp-air energy, and someone just tracked mud onto your rug. Here’s how to turn the falling leaves outside the window into actual science.

Start Here: Why Do the Leaves Change?

Learn more about why leaves change colors and more in fall science lessons & DIY activities for grades K-5.

Ask your students why leaves change color in the fall. Write down what they say.

Most will tell you it’s because the weather gets cold.

Here’s the fact that makes them pay attention: The yellow and orange colors are there all summer, they’re just hiding.

Chlorophyll is an attention hog. It covers up the other colors. Imagine a kid wearing a bright green winter coat over a yellow shirt. When they take their coat off, the yellow shirt didn’t magically appear, the coat just went away. When the sunlight drops in the fall, the trees stop making chlorophyll (the green coat), revealing the true colors underneath.

Grades K-2: The “Broken” Tree

Seasons happen in a pattern and fall is no different! check out these standards-aligned and zero-prep fall science lessons & activities for your K-5 learners.

Younger learners may see dead leaves falling and think the apple tree is broken. They need to understand that dropping leaves is just part of the job description for plants preparing to rest, not a botanical emergency.

Grades 3-5: Surviving the Tilt

Does the earth's orbit and rotation affect the seasons? How the animals affected by the earth's rotation? Learn more with fall science lessons & DIY activities for grades K-5.

Upper elementary students think they know everything about seasons until you ask them to quantitatively explain the angle of sunlight. Connecting the seasonal tilt to why trees structurally shut down keeps them from rolling their eyes.

The “I Have 20 Minutes Before Outside Play” Version

Check out these standards-aligned and zero prep fall science lessons & DIY activities for grades K-5.

No time to prep? Here’s exactly what to do:

Minutes 1-5: The “green coat” chlorophyll analogy (this one breaks their brains in a good way).

Minutes 6-15: Play the Generation Genius video for your grade level.

Minutes 16-20: Three-question true/false exit ticket on what actually causes the seasons or leaf changes.

Fall science is more than just leaf rubbings and paper plate suns. Embrace the seasonal change and use it for learning. It’s the perfect entry point for complex life cycles and planetary physics.
