Level 1

Write one sentence that could be the beginning of a story. Start your sentence with the word “First” and make sure we know who the story is about.

Level 2

Read these three sentences: “The class cheered as the last puzzle piece snapped into place.” “First, Mia opened the box and poured the puzzle pieces onto the table.” “Next, Mia noticed a missing piece and began to search under the table.” Number each sentence 1, 2, or 3 to show the beginning (1), middle (2), and end (3) of the story.

Level 3

Think of a story you know (from home, school, or the library). Write 2–3 sentences explaining what happens in the beginning, middle, and end of that story. Then explain how the story would be confusing if the parts were out of order.
