Instructions
STEP 1
Reach into your kit & pull out the special yellow paper that says Team High Five. Pass out one sheet to each student.
STEP 2
Teachers, grab the spray bottle of baking soda and water mix. You’ll demonstrate first.
STEP 3
Spray your hand 10 times, then slam it down onto the yellow paper. Wait 3 seconds and move your hand. Then, have the students try.
STEP 4
Students can take their special paper home and visit the link at the bottom of the paper to share this experiment with their parents at home too!
How It Works
In this experiment, we used a special paper made from turmeric, which is a root and makes things yellow. This turmeric paper changes colors when it comes in contact with baking soda and water. Some things in nature can change colors if they're in waters that are acidic like lemon juice, or basic like baking soda. These are called properties of liquids and this experiment allows us to experience them firsthand.
